Learning Styles

I always thought the idea of people having different learning styles was bullshit. More specifically, I figured if you were good at learning in one medium, you'd probably be good in others. I asked a Ph.D. in education about this yesterday and she said there was something to it.

She sent me a link to a site where you can test your learning style with a short, 13 question survey. http://www.vark-learn.com/english/page.asp?p=questionnaire

I tried it. Turns out I have a slight Aural preference. I love the spoken word. I prefer to think of it as an "aural fixation." And talking dirty as "aural sex."

If you take the survey, leave a comment and tell me how it evaluates you.

I guess I am best and reading and writing and doing....
I agree. Though reading and writing and visual seem to be very close... too close for me to call.
Peace.

Well I'm not suprised at all. I've often said I don't think in English, which is unfortunately the accepted mode of communication.

I also distrust these sort of things.

My scores were:

* Visual: 5
* Aural: 1
* Read/Write: 4
* Kinesthetic: 7

And I thought Improv was all about listening... (they call me multimodal -- but i like doing it and looking at it too..)

Im too cynical to trust these things, but i want to believe.

This is about right. As usual I'm all over the map. I'm a bit more visual but that's related more to memory.

You can especially see the different learning styles with kids and adolescents. When teaching (swimming) you have to discuss, demonstrate, do in order for everyone to understand. When I forget to show them or describe a skill out loud, the same kids will consistently not do the skill correctly. When I describe it in all three ways, they all understand.

I wonder how much learning styles are inherent or developed? Me, I'm weak at absorbing information when I read it, so I either read out loud or say the words in my head to emphasise them. This helps. So I agree with you in the sense that everyone can learn by every style; some may be more difficult to master, ergo the person must determine ways to adapt to different styles of teaching and presentations of material.
